SATO RESIDENCE
From the outside, the Sato house is composed of two simple overlapping boxes; the upper raised to the light, the lower encompassing the private rooms and sheltering the garden. Inside, open and enclosed spaces are carefully arranged to diminish the impact of a mixed-use neighborhood and create a welcoming family retreat.
To maximize both spaciousness and privacy, the common areas are located on the second floor. There, the open interior rooms and outside decks flow easily into each other, creating a generous living platform suspended above the site. To the east, a solid wall protects against disturbances from nearby parking lots and karaoke bars; to the west, the house is open to the afternoon sun and a restful view of distant mountains.
The clean lines of the home’s timber frame boxes are clad in lapped concrete board trimmed with aluminum. These unusual and extremely cost effective materials create a striking and original effect even as their traditional proportions have a comfortable familiarity.

佐藤邸
外側からは、佐藤邸は二つのオーバーラップした箱からなるシンプルな形をしている。上の箱は光と視界を求めて持ち上げられ、下の箱はプライベイトな諸室を包みつつ、庭を守る壁になっている。内部では、開放的な空間と閉じた空間のバランスによって、この高崎市の郊外－農地転換できたカラオケスナックや駐車場などの散在する環境－に対し、落ち着いた空間が作り出されている。
住宅に相応しい空間を作りつつ、敷地から最大限を引き出すよう、ダイニングリビングの主空間は二階に上げられた。ここから連続する二つのデッキテラスとオープンな内部空間は一体になって、敷地全体に浮かぶ大きなプラットフォームとなっている。このデッキは北と東に閉じており、周りの喧噪から守られている。西と南には開いていて、遥か榛名山や、周りの景色を楽しむことができる。
簡潔な木構造の構成は仕上のコンクリート板とアルミジョイントでできた外壁と共鳴している。この一般的ではないけれど、非常に廉価で丈夫な材料の構成は 伝統的住宅の持っていた親しみのあるプロポーションに似た、ユニークな効果をあげている。
