CROSBY STEET LOFT


In the ‘80s the clients converted this space into an art studio by themselves. They were ready now to transform the loft it into a clean, sophisticated modern living space changing it from the original industrial look, removing the accrued surface mounted electric conduits and air ducts while keeping the spirit of the loft with its high ceilings and open space. By providing several key interwoven elements multiple issues were solved simultaneously addressing not only the local problems but solving an overall concern at the same time.

 

There are large east facing windows on the street side but there are no windows in the rear. The party walls do have windows that switch from north to south in the middle of the linear footprint. Two bathrooms are located on the shaft side opposite the north windows, hidden behind the kitchen/dining area. Ducts and pipes were tucked above the bathrooms and kitchen. The slab is exposed everywhere and is kept clean without obstacles to block natural light. The bathrooms become accent light fixtures diffusing colored light into the dining area.

 

The walls around the bedrooms are laid out diagonally giving every bedroom its own window. This layout gives a flow of space instead of the rigid separation of small rooms. Walls are carefully located to reflect light from the windows throughout the entire loft. The wall facing the kitchen became a feature wall to hang artwork, making visible the spatial flow to the bedrooms. Interior walls are open at the top to allow light to penetrate. With this strategy, there is no point where you cannot see natural light. Private spaces are tucked away while providing diffuse light.

 
 
 

クロスビー通りのロフト

 

８０年代にクライアント自らの手で工場から作り変えられたアートスタジオが、今や清潔で洗練された住居空間に作り変えられる時期になった。かつての素晴らしい高い天井や開放的な空間は維持したいが、ロフトデザインにお定まりの露出したダクトやパイプ類は見たくない。そこで、鍵となる幾つかの要素が提案された。それらは局所的に課題を解くだけでなく、複数の問題を同時に解き、さらにお互いに織り合わさって、全体に寄与する。

 

通り側には大きな窓があるものの、裏側には典型的にあるはずの窓がない。その代わりに隣家との間の二つの長い壁には部分的に窓があって、その中間ほどで一方から一方へ飛び移る。そこで浴室は建物を縦に貫く共用シャフトの側にまとめられ、キッチンの裏側にレイアウトされた。パイプや空調ダクトはキッチンと浴室の上にたくしあげられた。上階の床下面を現しとし、自然光を遮るものは何もない。浴室の小窓から漏れる光がダイニングのアクセントとなる。

 

寝室群を構成する壁は対角線状に配置され、各寝室は床面積を諦めることなく、十全な窓が割りあてられた。この配置はまた、小室群でこわばった空間を作るのではなく、流れをもたらしている。キッチンに面する壁は住み手のアート作品が掛けられて焦点となる。内部壁は外光を反射してロフト全体に拡散するよう注意深く設計された。壁の上部はすべて開いていて、光が行き渡る。このロフトの中で自然光が見えない場所はどこにもない。
