CARRIAGE HOUSE
This addition to an 1860’s Carriage House is located in an historic district of Brooklyn Heights. A master bedroom suite with terrace and a second bedroom have been added to this landmark property. The house was converted from stables and carriage storage in 1949 into a studio loft and tenant apartment.
The new volume is comprised of two simple forms which are strategically located to maintain the historic streetscape and are not visible from street level. This addition preserves the spirit of the existing and adds a contemporary layer to a modern classic.
The composition is designed to provide a continuous visual connection from the grade level garden to the new roof top terrace. This continuous exterior space culminates in the open roof top views from the master bedroom suite to the roof top views of Brooklyn Heights.
Two simple boxes are clad in concrete board and metal cladding with large window areas; light elements delicately set on the existing masonry structure. The new spaces are located to maintain maximum privacy and keep the existing tenant unit. A new stair is inserted into the existing loft to introduce light into the existing living area.
While preserving the historical atmosphere the addition creates a sumptuous urban oasis that supports the modern lifestyle of the family.

ブルックリンのタウンハウス
敷地はニューヨークのブルックリンの歴史的町並みの中にある。1860年に馬車庫として建てられた建物への主寝室と個室の増築である。成長する家族の現代的な生活をサポートするだけでなく、歴史的な町並みの佇まいを守りつつ、さらにより豊かな空間が生まれるようにした。
増築部は2つのシンプルな箱の形をとって既存の建物の上に載せられた。通り側からは見えないよう、また裏の庭園側の既存部分も保存された。平屋根の上の主寝室の箱の以外の残りの部分には寝室に連続する大きなテラスが設けられた。庭園側と通り側の両方向に開放されて、大量の光が入ってくる。庭園側からは歴史的町並みがテナント住戸の緑と地表の庭園の梢越しに見渡せ、通り側からは通りの雰囲気が屋上テラス越しに伝わってくる。
地表の庭園からは屋上テラスに抜ける垂直方向の外部空間の連なりを設計した。視界のない地表からも心理的に屋上の広がりが感じられる。
2つの箱はテナントと施主の間のプライバシーが守られるよう、また採光を妨げないよう注意深く置かれている。新たにオープンな階段室が設けられ、垂直方向の動線が作られた。その空間を通して居間の奥にまで光が届けられるようになった。 |
