GREEN POINT LIBRARY, NEW YORK

This project is an addition to a public library in Brooklyn. The existing ground floor will be maintained and a 2nd floor education and environmental center will be added above the existing structure. The site is located at an intersection of the Brooklyn residential street grid. Unfortunately there are no landmarks or significant urban structures so that the library has no public context within the neighborhood, giving the impression it has been thrown in or just happened to be there. Luckily a subway exit is located nearby and a gentle slope extends towards the library and from the new upper floor the view across Brooklyn and into Manhattan is visible. With an undefined budget, no program and no drawings of the existing structure, we proposed…

• A gentle slope from the intersection to access the new addition creating a promenade to the library. The new addition will recompose the existing spaces allowing the flow of users to be screened by folding layers while keeping transparency along the street.

• By projecting the building to the street at the intersection the addition will work as a beacon. A new roof terrace visible from the street will be used for gatherings encouraging community interaction. As you approach the library you will see the whole building gradually unfold.

• Growing elements reinforce the use of the building as an environmental center; the walls will change with the season. Plants will be used as one of building materials like metal panels or glazing instead of added elements or attachments

• The addition is frugal and transforms the original so that they are transformed together.

The project is currently engaged in fund raising.
