TOKYO INTERNATIONAL FORUM


The Tokyo International Forum is a unique cultural center located within Tokyo’s central business area, adjacent to the Ginza and the Imperial Palace. There are remarkably few spaces in Japan that truly fulfil the definition of public place.  A space that is comfortable for crowds and for individuals, here they can take pleasure in their city not just access a venue for events and exhibitions. 

Commissioned by the Tokyo Metropolitan this 1.4 million SF project was built in 4 years with a budget of $1.2 billion dollars.

 

The project has an ambitious civic mandate, serving as a focus for cultural and business activities in the Japanese capital. The facility houses 4 major performing arts spaces (ranging in size from 2,000 seats to 110), cultural information centers, a public plaza, and an internationally recognized art collection.

 

Sandra McKee and Hiroki Yoshihara together accumulated 10 years of experience working on the design and construction of this building in the office of Rafael Vinoly Architects.

東京国際フォーラムは銀座と皇居の間、東京駅から有楽町駅にわたる旧都庁の跡地に建てられた 巨大な複合文化施設である。 建物は首都のビジネスと芸術‐文化活動の中心として機能するよう計画された。

 

プロジェクトは東京都の依頼により、１６００億円をかけ、３年の設計期間と４年の建設期間の後完成した。サンドラ マッキーと吉原 弘記はラファエル ビニオリ 事務所にて、設計デザインと建設の監修を担当した。

 

文化活動の中心は４つの主ホール、文化情報センター、プラザから構成さている。ホールはそれぞれ５０００席の劇場、３０００席の平土間多目的ホール、１５００席のコンサートホール、６００席の実験劇場からなっている。ビジネスセンターは５０００㎡の国際展示場、レセプションホール、大小会議場などから構成されている。ガラスでできた大アトリウムはこの建築のメインエントランスとして機能している。ここには単に催し物があるというだけではなく、都市に住む楽しみが実感できる、気持ちのよい空間が醸成された。日本に唯一、真の意味でパブリック プレイス “都市の広場”と言える空間が実現されている。
