BAMIYAN CULTURAL CENTER, AFGANISTAN

This competition entry for the Bamiyan Cultural Center pays homage to this UNESCO World Heritage Site; embracing traditional forms and techniques, infusing contemporary culture and methods with a vision for the future.

The site is entered through a geometrically planted garden on the upper level. This open-air park is a public amenity that ties into the town’s civic center. Descending to the lower level, visitors explore a path that wraps the hillside to their final destination; a rectilinear volume that houses classrooms, reception and support spaces opening onto a courtyard.

Referencing the courtyards of the local domestic architecture, the court provides an area for visitors and staff to enjoy the outdoors. Positioned between the community center, the museum and the natural hill which visitors descended, the courtyard has a forced perspective that focuses visitors’ views and creates a setting similar to the “Buddhas’ cave”.

From here, visitors enter the museum contained in the new “hill”. The museum’s barrel-vaulted structure, an ancient technology, contains artifacts of the destroyed Bamiyan Buddhas and the area’s archeological history. The cool dark interior recalls the areas’ caves and catacombs and provides a low-light, weighty atmosphere suggesting the seriousness of the region’s history, ordeals, and loss. Visitors reemerge into the courtyard with a newfound understanding and respect for the past and hope for the future.

Like this region, the Center contains multiple viewpoints, ideas, and timelines to provide a rich history and experience for visitors.
