MURMANSK VALLEY PARK


Murmansk faces the North Sea in Russia. With lingering nights, long snow-covered winters, and a limited choice of vegetation many people struggle to build gardens. The rapid urban expansion did not allow an urban landscape to develop. Our proposal creates an intimate experience at a small scale by transforming the existing landscape with minimal but effective alterations.

Preserving the memory of the existing landscape, these new alterations are very artificial reminders that emphasize the difference between human activity and nature’s activity… mounds and kiosks. They invoke nature but they are not the result of nature or a triumph of human creation…nature and art are superimposed. The mounds have an artificial form recognized as augmented nature like a dike. The kiosks are all identical, economically built, repeated with a musical rhythm, their combinations provide an identity to each cluster. The spaces between mounds create intimate hidden, found space and from their top they offer an uplifting experience with views over the entire park.

This surreal landscape provides a unique and different experience than the citizens have in the city, views at multiple scales and mysterious encounters between new and existing, natural and artificial. This distinctively differentiated nature contrasts with the rolling hills of Murmansk.

 
 
 

ムーマンスク谷公園

 

ムーマンスクはロシアの北海に面する都市である。雪に覆われた長い夜、そして限られた植生の選択肢の中で、多くの人々は庭を建てるのに苦労してきた。加えて、都市の急速な拡大は、都市景観を作り出すのを不可能にしていた。 私たちの提案は、最小限の効果的な変更で既存の風景を変換して、小規模で親密な体験を生み出します。

今ある土地の記憶を壊さずに、新しく加えられる変形は、純粋の自然でも人口物でもなく、人工物と自然の営みの違いを際立てる。マウンドとキオスクである。これらは、自然を喚起しつつも、単なる自然現象の結果でもなければ、人の想像活動の勝利でもなく、それらの重ね合わせである。マウンドは堤防のように、いわば人工の自然の拡張である。 キオスクはすべて同一の形をしていて、造船所で経済的に作られる。方向や数、組み合わせを変えて集められて、クラスターに個性が生まれる。マウンドの間には囲まれた落ちついた親しい空間ができる。マウンドの上に上がれば全公園の胸のすく眺望が得られる。

この際立って異化された自然は、ムルマンスクが乗っている　なだらかな丘とは対照的をなしている。超現実の景色は様々に変わるスケール、新しいさと既視の神秘的な遭遇、自然と人工の対比といった、都市の中では得られない経験を提供する。
