BROOKLYN HEIGHTS REGIDENCEThis project combined two adjacent units into one apartment. The building was originally a hotel and later converted to a residential building, with the current structure and plumbing showing the remainders of the original use. The rough insertion of a new kitchen and dining room into the hotel rooms constrained the plan of the apartments.
The kitchen of the studio apartment was converted to a bathroom, its bathroom became the entry, and the adjacent unit was gutted. The master bedroom had the best location for sunlight, pushing the dining room deeper, into a corner of the corridor where the sunlight barely reached. The living at the corner of the unit had access to the roof terrace and was the prized center of the apartment with large book shelves and a view of Brooklyn Bridge. It was the most comfortable and bright, though it consumed all the light, and was too small to function as the main living room.
Our proposal removed all the interior walls of the second apartment except the bathroom and recomposed the relationship of living room, dining room and kitchen to provide sunlight into the center of the apartment, while maintaining the intimate atmosphere of the previous living area. A large sliding wall was added to control the independent or combined use of this cozy corner from the living room by opening or closing to provide an additional sleeping area. |
