THE TOWN SCHOOL SOUTH WING


The school started from a old settlement house and extended to the base of a residential high-rise in1980’s. It is allowed to use only the bottom floors of the high-rise and renovate only internally to grow. The wing was being re-imagined to create a better connection with its riverside location, providing a dignified space to encourage learning and to create its own character for the graduating students.

 

The entire floor was investigated, locating any walls that were not structural to create a flexible realignment of the classroom spaces. 2ft thick masonry that had been assumed to be structural were removed. Spaces that were not fully utilized or inefficient were consolidated into usable space. Additional offices and gathering space for students were generated.

 

In the classrooms , teaching and writing spaces are provided on 3 sides of the room with finishes that can be written on or used for display on every wall. By adding windows, the spaces adjacent to the river are relaxed spots to view the river and stretch the student's imagination. All corridor walls also were designed for writing or pinup, transforming corridors into the extension of classrooms. To gain extra space the ceilings were opened to the underside of the existing metal deck, with four types of ceilings designed to float within the rooms. Large clerestories, create the spatial openness and continuity from classroom to corridor, making each classroom visually larger.

 

A new skylight was built above the central stair which was added in the “80s. It created a brighter internal “heart” and image for the school. Adding the large mirrored wall produces a virtual image that doubles the space. It has become the focal point of the school.

この学校は２０世紀初頭に隣保会館から改造されて発足し、８０年代に隣接された超高層ビルの低層部の一部を取り込んで発展して生きた。学校が成長するには超高層の与えられた低層部を使うことだけが可能で、外部へは拡張が不可能であった。イーストリバー川を見下ろす環境を活用しつつ、生徒の学習を促進し、卒業生に記憶されるイマージとなりえるような場所として、高学年棟の可能性がずっと考慮され続けてきた。

 

まず、全フロアで、構造を受け持たない壁が調べられた。６０㎝厚の数１０ｍにも及ぶレンガ壁が実は荷重を負担していない事が発見され、取り除かれた。無駄な残り物の床や不効率な部屋は寄せ集められ、利用できる空間、教員室や井戸端コーナーにまとめられた。

 

教室は三つのいずれの方向からでも授業ができるよう、書ける壁とピンネップできる壁でできている。外壁に新な窓を開けることで、川の眺望が得られ、生徒の目を休め、想像力を広げる。すべての廊下も同様で教室の延長として使えるようになっている。壁の上部は大きく開かれ、廊下と教室が空間的に連続する。天井高を最大限にするために既存の釣り天井はすべて廃棄され、ダクトは整理され、新天井が浮かべられた。これらは視覚的に空間を広げ、窮屈さを取り除いている。

 

８０年代に建設された階段室の屋根が全面的に新しいスカイライトに入れ替えられた。明るい心臓部とそのイマージを学校に与えている。学校の新たな焦点が作られた。
