PRINCETON UNIVERSITY CARL ICAHN LABORATORY


The Carl Icahn Laboratory is the home of The Lewis-Sigler Institute for Interactive Genomics, an interdisciplinary institute with the mission of conducting innovative research into the fundamentals of genomics.


A series of laboratories were designed that can easily be restructured to accommodate the needs of the various disciplines such as microbiologist, computational scientist and physicist. A large atrium space links the laboratories, providing a gracious public space to foster communication between the scientists as well as; students, post doctors and professors. The building also accommodates lecture rooms, a conference room housed in a Frank Gerry sculpture and full support spaces for the laboratory research.

Sandra McKee was the director for this project in the office of Rafael Vinoly Architects, completed in 2004.

カールアイカン実験所は相互的ジェミックス学の学際的な研究所で、遺伝子の基礎研究を革新的に行っている。

 

研究の分野はミクロ生物学、計算機科学、物理学などにわたっている。さまざまな分野の必要に応じて、フレキシブルに対応できるように、 実験室は容易に再編ができるようにデザインされた。学生、研究者、他の分野の研究者などの間にコミュニケーションが自然に誘発されることが目論まれ、大きな吹き抜けのホールが中心に設けられている。実験室に取り囲こまれて、さまざまな利用者のラウンジとなっている。他には講演室や彫刻的な形の会議室（フランクゲーリー作）など、研究に必要な施設が用意されている。

 

校庭に面して,南面には大きな回転式調光ルーバーの列が仕組まれて、直射日光で建物が熱せられるのを防いでいる。この結果、この空間に劇的な影の列と、開けた校庭の眺望をもたらしている。ここでは熱い議論が冷やされ、新しいアイデアのインスピレーションが湧く。

 

サンドラマッキーはラファエルヴィニオリと共に設計に携わり、2004年に完成した。
