UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS


The University of Chicago’s graduate School of business is located on the Hyde Park campus. The building draws on the stylistic influences of this prominent location; Frank Lloyd Wright’s prairie style Robie House and the neo Gothic buildings of the campus highlighted by the Rockefeller chapel.


Respecting the Robie house, the first 2 floors of the building which house student support spaces are clad in limestone and use a vocabulary of cantilevers to create a series of outdoor terraces.  This horizontal arrangement of the program defines 2 public spaces; a winter garden and an exterior landscaped court. The glass and steel winter garden atrium utilizes a modern interpretation of the gothic vocabulary of the campus.The classrooms are located one level below grade, where the winter garden creates a lighted heart for the space. At the upper levels are the faculty offices; custom designed for each professor, with floor to ceiling glass providing views of the surrounding campus.


Sandra McKee was the Project director for this project in the office of Rafael Vinoly Architects, commuting to Chicago on a weekly basis for 2 years.

敷地はキャンパスの中の際だった場所にあり、フランクロイドライトの設計によるロビーハウスとゴシック様式のロックフェラー教会に隣接している。この建物はこれらの有名な建物への形態的な“尊敬”がなされつつ設計された。

 

１階と２階はロビーハウスが参照されており、ライム石の外壁が採用され, またキャンティレバーによって水平線の強調された戸外空間が作り出されている。この部分は学生のための空間として、 “冬庭園”と中庭の二つの公共空間が収容されている。冬庭園はこのキャンパスに用いられているゴシック様式の現代的解釈と言える。中庭はキャンパスに設けられた一連の中庭群の一つで、相互に響き合うよう考慮された。

 

教室群は地下に配置されているが、冬庭園を中心にして、明るい空間となっている。上階は研究室群からなっていて、各教授のために個々にデザインされている。床から天井まであるガラス壁によって周囲のキャンパスの眺望が得られている。
