ASTORIA QUEENS LIBRARYThis is an addition and renovation project for the Astoria branch of the New York Queens Library. The Queens Library has been revising their libraries to better serve the community with improved accessibility and adding programs that open the building for many uses. This new concept for the libraries goes beyond the classic use of sharing books. This branch has exceptional exterior spaces that are not currently used to their full potential, the renovation of the building will enhance the exterior with an open welcoming entry from grade level inviting the neighborhood into the library and making it visibly and physically accessible. The site has a desirable location creating a focus at the top of a long sloping residential street. The addition will serve as the spine for the whole building. It will transform the library drastically. The program includes a new entrance lobby, an elevator and a new interior bridge providing access to all floors. The mezzanine floor will be rebuilt and the entire library reorganized functionality including replacing the staff offices, reorganizing reading rooms and upgrading infrastructure to LEED silver level. This project was awarded to YMA thorough the Design Excellence Award program of the New York City Department of Design and Construction. |
